Moses keeps reminding Israel in his farewell sermon that they didn’t in any way merit or earn God’s favor. God chose them to be his people in a sheer act of grace, as the catechism puts it, “with no merit or worthiness” in them. When we know that our relationship with God is not about our performance but rather his work of grace, we will be moved to devote ourselves, in gratitude and humility, to serving him.

Monday | Genesis 15:1-16
God promised to Abram all the Promised Land, but not yet. In God’s grace, God showed 400 years of patience to the Amorites. Why are God’s promises so important to our faith? Does this prophecy change how you see God choosing Abram and destroying other nations? Explain. How can this comfort us when we do not see God’s promises being fulfilled the way we want?

Tuesday | Deuteronomy 7:1-9
Abram’s offspring are now in the place God promised them, and Moses reiterated that God had chosen them. What do you notice about God’s direction to Israel? How should the fact that God chose them change their confidence and expectations? What promise of God do you need to remember and cling to today? Why?

Wednesday | Deuteronomy 9:4-7
Israel was stubborn and rebellious in the wilderness. But Moses reminded them that God’s grace was not dependent on them- they would have lost it long ago. When have you been stubborn or rebellious? What comfort is there in God’s love for us, no matter what? Do you see this as permission to continue in sin, or a reason to be more holy? Explain.

Thursday | John 15:12-17
Jesus has chosen us to make a lasting impact. To live a fruitful life. What is the difference between choosing and chosen? Why do you think Jesus clarifies that for his disciples and us? What impact do you think Jesus wants you to make?

Friday | 1 Peter 2:1-10
Peter tells the church that they are the continuation of Israel in the Old Testament because God has called them and made them his chosen race and holy nation. What does Peter say we need to eliminate from our lives now? How does being God’s change your view of yourself? List some “excellencies” (v.9) that you would like to proclaim to a person in your life.
