Week of November 9, 2025

As we look this week at becoming immune to addiction, we must first diagnose the real problem: idolatry. And then we can arrive at the real solution: not mere sobriety, but enjoyment of God’s presence and love over everything else.

Monday | Romans 1:18-25
Humans have turned away from God and toward the things God has made. We’ve made idols of God’s good gifts. What created things does our society or culture highly value? How do you see addictions being encouraged today? Who benefits from addictions? Who needs your prayers today?

Tuesday | Proverbs 23:19-35
The wisdom of Proverbs cautions us against binge drinking, binge eating, and sexual indulgences, along with all other addictive tendencies. What are you overindulging in? How is it affecting your relationships with others? How about with God? How would your life be better if you submitted this area to God and God’s control? Finally, will you submit this to God’s control?

Wednesday | John 6:27-34
Jesus claims bread for his flesh and wine for his blood: the life-giving meal of Communion. How does Communion re-orient us toward God’s good gifts? Why do you think it’s important to receive this meal from Christ? What satisfaction can Jesus alone give?

Thursday | Daniel 1:8-20
Daniel refused to defile himself with the impure and unholy food of the Babylonian king. How did Daniel handle social pressure? Why do you think Daniel could be so confident? How might this story be helpful for people struggling with addiction?

Friday | Psalm 73:21-26
Our sins, including addiction, draw us away from God. But God’s heart keeps him close to us. God is our strength. What do you rely on to get you through tough days or seasons? Why do you think it’s easy to turn to things other than Jesus? How can this Psalm encourage you toward reliance on God alone?

**Bonus day for WL | James 1:12-17
Every good gift comes from God. What does this imply, then, about the good things that tempt us toward overindulgence? Where can we properly locate temptations to sin? How are you allowing sin to grow? How can you strengthen your own perseverance by refraining from evil as well as enjoying God’s good gifts?
