As we continue our series, “Immune,” we are considering the problem of loneliness. In our high-tech culture, we have amazing ways to connect with people, yet a sense of loneliness is more common than ever. People struggle to make meaningful connections and feel they are known, understood, and cared for. As God’s people in Christ, we are blessed to know we are never truly alone. We have a friend in Jesus Christ, who is always with us, and He binds us to a community of fellow believers.
Monday | Genesis 16:1-14 & 21:14-21
Hagar felt alone in the wilderness, yet God saw her in her loneliness and responded. When have you felt all alone, or cast out? In what ways did you sense that God was there for you? When you feel like no one understands you or is there for you, can you believe that God really does? How do you need God to “see” you in your situation today? Call out to Him, and ask Him to reveal Himself and his loving care more clearly.
Tuesday | Psalm 25:11-18
David reaches out to God in this Psalm in his loneliness and distress. In verse 14, he says God shares His counsel or “friendship” with His people. What would it mean for God to be your friend? How might thinking of God this way help in times of loneliness? What makes it challenging to think of God as a friend? How is God working to overcome the barriers between you and Him?
Wednesday | John 15:12-17
Jesus calls His disciples friends. How has He proven his friendship with you? How does it feel to know that Jesus has chosen you to have a friendship with Him? In what ways have you felt a friend-like connection with Jesus? How can you invest in this kind of relationship with Him?
Thursday | John 14:15-21
In these verses, what promises does Jesus give regarding his personal support for you? How do these promises connect with the reading in John 15? How can you apply these promises to help you during times of loneliness?
Friday | Romans 15:1-7
Jesus calls his followers to provide relational care for each other in His name. How does being part of a Christian community combat our feelings of loneliness? Who in your life welcomes you like Jesus has? Who needs you to welcome them in the name of Jesus and offer them companionship?
