It is easy to devote ourselves to the gifts rather than to the Giver. This was Moses’ concern for his people, as the idols of the land would tempt their worship.  In our land of abundance, we arguably have even more idols that entice our hearts’ devotion. Let’s do some self-examination today regarding our own idol worship and remember the treasure we have in such a Savior as Jesus.

Monday | Deuteronomy 4:6-8
The ways of God are beautiful, and they will cause the world around us to be amazed. Often, we experience people who think God’s ways are not good. Why do you think there’s a disconnect today? How can you articulate the ways of God in a way that demonstrates the value and beauty to someone who is unfamiliar?

Tuesday | Deuteronomy 4:32-40
God displayed his power and presence to Israel, and this was a witness to God’s deep care and love for them. God is alone the Ruler, King, Guide, Mighty One. When have you experienced God’s power and presence? How do you honor God as the Only God? When do you fail to do so?

Wednesday | Deuteronomy 8:11-18
Forgetting is a huge problem among God’s people; they give credit to almost anything but God. What do you credit for the good things in your life? How about the bad? How do you practice remembering what God has done for you? Spend some time now recalling some of the good things God has done for you.

Thursday | John 1:14-18
Jesus came as the ultimate display of God’s presence and power. Jesus is superior to Moses because he brings the grace that Moses could only mention and long for. What does it mean that we have received grace upon grace from his fullness? When do you struggle to hold together grace and truth? How does Jesus, at the Father’s side, make God known in a more intimate way even than the Old Testament victories?

Friday | John 12:27-33
People heard the voice of God speak of Jesus, “I have glorified my name, and I will glorify it again.” Jesus clarified that this voice was about the presence and power of God: the power to defeat sin, death, and the devil. How does Jesus’ humanity come across in this passage? Why is the cross the ultimate symbol of God’s presence and power? Why is it so important to keep Jesus’ sacrifice on our hearts and minds?
