Moses reminds the people of Israel that God had given them the gift of a covenant with himself.  He then retells the Ten Commandments as the path of living out that covenant relationship.  It would be a path of blessing for them as they follow God's ways.

Monday | Deuteronomy 5:1-6
Moses teaches that the context of God’s law is in the amazing grace of His covenant promises. He also reminds the people of how God saved Israel from slavery. How does focusing on God’s salvation and promises of grace for us help frame your understanding of the 10 commandments?  In what ways can you see obedience to God as part of an uplifting and positive life with Him?

Tuesday | Deuteronomy 5:7-21
Spend some time reflecting on each commandment as a gift of God’s grace, guiding us into a full life. For each commandment: What good is God providing for us as individuals, as a church, and as a society?  What negative issues is God protecting us from in calling us to live this way?

Wednesday | Deuteronomy 5:22-33
What stands out in these verses regarding the commitment the people make and God’s desire for them moving forward? What commitment of obedience to God’s ways have you made in your heart?  What keeps you from making a stronger commitment?  How have you found blessing in living according to the commandments of God?

Thursday | Matthew 5:13-20
Jesus came to fulfill the law on our behalf but also to show us how significant it is for life in God’s kingdom.  What does living according to God’s ways do to make a positive difference for those around us? What negative consequences are there when Christians fail to live out their faith by following God’s instructions for life?

Friday | 1 Peter 2:4-12
What similarities do you see here between God’s call on us and His call on the people of Israel?  How can you use your life as a witness to the grace and salvation you have received in Jesus Christ?
