Monday | Exodus 20:1-12
God begins the “Ten Words” by telling the people how to relate to God. The word about parenting is the first about human relationships. What do you think this says about God’s priorities in human relationships? Why is honoring our parents so important, and why do you think it comes with a promise? How can you keep this commandment today?

Tuesday | Ephesians 6:1-4
God has words for children, but also for parents. How do parents represent God to their children? What do you think causes parents to be harsh with their children? How can we more faithfully encourage, uplift, and instruct the young people in our lives?

Wednesday | Psalm 127
The good life is anchored in the Lord’s provision. What image or metaphor is most compelling to you from this psalm? What comfort do we get from knowing God is in control of all things? If children are to their parents like a weapon to a warrior, how does this inform the way we love and care for them?

Thursday | Luke 2:41-52
Jesus was a self-directed child, full of confidence and the Holy Spirit. Yet he still submitted to his parents and showed them respect. How did Jesus both assert himself and remain a respectful child? Which way do you naturally lean, and how can you learn from Jesus’ example? If you were Mary or Joseph, how would you have handled this situation?

Friday | Proverbs 22:1-6
Proverbs is written from a father’s perspective to give wisdom and insight to a child. In what ways are parents our primary teachers, coaches, counselors, and role models? What do you think are some ways we can protect them from danger? Why is our way of life so critical in the formation process - not just for ourselves, but for all those following us?
