Week 2 | Celebrate the Way
The Bible is full of journey language when it comes to living a life of faith. God calls us to travel his way, a life with him made possible through Jesus. We are called to walk: to engage with him in his Word and to live with joy-filled obedience to his will.
Monday | Exodus 16:4, 18:20
Exodus 16:04 illustrates one of the challenges of translating the Hebrew and Greek verb “to walk” … especially when it’s used metaphorically. Here, the NIV simply uses the verb “follow” and in other verses “live.” The ESV tends to be more literal and here reads, “… that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.” (Exodus 16:4, ESV) How are we to “walk” on our journey of faith? How might “walk” convey a sense of intention and effort? We are to walk God’s “way.” What does God’s way involve?
Tuesday | Psalm 1
What are the two contrasting “ways” that the psalm speaks of? How do faithful followers walk the “way of the righteous”? What characterizes the “way of sinners”? What does this psalm promise for the person who walks God’s way (see 1:3 … a change of metaphor!)? What aspects of your life with God do you most celebrate?
Wednesday | Matthew 7:13-14
Here, Jesus speaks of two gates and two ways. Pastor Mark’s take is that Jesus contrasts the many different paths human beings are led to pursue (thus, the human road is broad) with the narrow road offered only through Jesus. What has it meant for you to enter the narrow gate and walk the narrow way? What has been key to your daily walk with Jesus?
Thursday | John 14:1-6
Here we have both the promise of a place with Jesus in eternity and his audacious statement that he is the Way. What is your response when someone asks you how Jesus can be the only way to God? In your life’s journey, when did you begin to see that Jesus was your way to God? How is this good news worth celebrating for all of humanity?
Friday | Ephesians 4:1-6
Here again the ESV is helpful as it reads, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,” (Ephesians 4:1–2, ESV) How does the idea of walking with Jesus have a different connotation than simply believing in Jesus? What are two or three of the most important things for you in living out your “calling” from Jesus? To what kind of walk does Jesus call his entire church?
