What is God like? Over the millennia, various answers to this question have been proposed based on diverse observations, experiences, and attitudes. Just like with a person, to know what God is really like, we must get to know what is in His heart. Christians base our answers on how God has revealed himself to us. He has done this through His written word, and at the heart of that word is the Gospel, the good news of what God has done and continues to do for us.  In the Gospel, we see that the heart of God is a commitment to love and care for His people. This week, we look more closely at some of the specific characteristics of God that are revealed to us in the Gospel.

For the readings each day, write down the characteristic(s) of God that are shown.

Monday | Luke 15

What do the father’s responses to the son’s requests and actions indicate about his desires for his son? Knowing that the father in the story is representative of our Heavenly Father, how does his response to the son’s return make you feel about your relationship with God?

Tuesday | Psalm 103

In what ways has God given you what you do not deserve today? This week? Why does God not “deal with us according to our sins”? How does this Psalm indicate that God thinks and feels about you?

Wednesday | Romans 5:6-11; John 3:16-21

What does it mean to you that God is willing to sacrifice to bring you into an eternal relationship with Him? How does this offer comfort and confidence when you struggle with sin?

Thursday | Colossians 1:24-29; 2 Corinthians 4:1-11

These passages speak of God’s glory and light. In what ways have you felt God sharing his glory and light in your life through the Gospel? What does it mean that having “Christ in you” is your hope of glory?

Friday | Ephesians 2:11-22; Galatians 3:25-29

According to these passages, who is the Gospel of God for? How does God’s grace break down the barriers we set up between us and people who are different from us?
