Week 2  Broken Together

We are united with all human beings in our mortality, sinfulness, and brokenness.  Together we long for more, desiring to expand our personal “kingdoms.”  The Bible’s language is that “we are one in Adam” and that therefore “the ground is level at the foot of the cross.”   All people are equally in need of spiritual deliverance and equally welcomed into a relationship with Jesus by faith.

Monday | Genesis 3:1-13

What part of the serpent’s words were true and what part false? How does Satan mix truth and lies in America today? What do you think was the purpose of God’s command regarding the forbidden fruit? What motivated Adam and Eve’s disobedience? What were the immediate results of that disobedience?

Tuesday | Genesis 3:14-24

What are the consequences of human sin as described in chapter 3? Why is 3:15 historically understood as being the first promise of the Messiah? Why would God have allowed Adam and Eve to sin? Why do you think that God banished them from the Garden?

Wednesday | Romans 3:9-20

What does the Apostle Paul say that Jews and Gentiles, religious and non-religious, have in common? What claims of “privilege” do people make with regard to having a relationship with God? What is the primary purpose of God’s law? How does God’s law humble us, and why is that a good thing?

Thursday | Romans 5:12-21

Here, the Apostle Paul contrasts Jesus and Adam. List in two columns the contrast between the two. What results from each one? What in this passage stands out as a reason to celebrate Jesus and his saving work?

Friday | 1 John 1:8 – 2:2

Given the reality of our sin, the Apostle John urges us to confess and seek God’s forgiveness. What leads Christians not to take sin seriously? How does confession benefit the soul even if you already know that you have God’s forgiveness? How would you respond to someone who says, “It doesn’t matter how I live since God will forgive me anyway”?
