Week 3  Invited Together

We are all searching for deeper meaning and purpose, a connection to the “divine.” Whether it is through transcendental meditation, hallucinogens, yoga, mindfulness, or other means, we all desire “God,” i.e., something higher than ourselves. We don’t have to work for it, empty ourselves, get in the correct position, etc., because God has come to us in Jesus.

Monday | Acts 17:16-33

What strikes you about how Paul approaches preaching to the Athenians? How might the idea of worshipping an “unknown God” apply to American culture today? What indications have you seen that people in general are seeking to know God, or at least to satisfy a spiritual longing with something greater than and outside of themselves?

Tuesday | Matthew 11:25-30

Jesus invites “all” of us to come to him when we recognize our need. How have you learned that sin (your own sin and sin in the world) makes you weary and burdened? How does it feel to hear this invitation personally from Jesus? What is your response to the fact that Jesus invites everyone to enjoy his rest?

Wednesday | Luke 14:12-24, Revelation 19:6-9

God often describes life in His kingdom as a wedding celebration. According to Jesus’ parable, who will ultimately be invited to the feast in God’s Kingdom? How does this make you feel about your invitation to be a part of His kingdom and the celebration? How should this affect our attitude about others, with whom we have problems? What warning is there for us in this parable?

Thursday | 1 Timothy 2:1-6

Timothy underscores the truth that God’s invitation to salvation is for everyone, though none of us is worthy. What people have you been tempted to think are beyond receiving this invitation? Why? How would Jesus have us approach those who have not yet accepted the invitation?

Friday | 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17; John 17:20-26

How do you respond to the idea that God has chosen you to be in a right relationship with Him, as well as to be united with all of those He has saved from condemnation? In what ways can we work more to be unified as God’s people, as Jesus prays for us?
