Monday | Jeremiah 29:4-7
God’s people found themselves far from home, with “neighbors” in Babylon that they never asked for or wanted. But God’s instructions were clear: seek the peace of this place. Why do you think God would command them to invest their lives in Babylon? How are you investing in your community/ neighborhood? What do you believe God is putting on your heart?
Tuesday | Leviticus 19:9-18
God commanded his people to make sure they showed generosity to strangers and those in great need. This command becomes the center of the New Testament teaching on the Law. How would you put this passage into modern terms, where we don’t have grape vines, and no one should eat the feed corn that is growing in the fields? What does “as yourself” amplify in the command to love our neighbor? Who is God putting on your heart today to love and extend his Kingdom to them?
Wednesday | Luke 10:25-29
A man who knows the Bible came to talk to Jesus about the Bible. He exposed his heart as wanting to “justify himself.” In other words, his good deeds were all about him. When have you made your faith all about you? Why is self-justification such a tempting and toxic trait? What selfishness do you need to confess to God?
Thursday | Luke 10:30-37
One of the most well-known stories in all the world reorients us to ourselves and our neighbors. We can try to get our heads right, but the Good Samaritan had his heart and his hands right- and ready to love. What is the most inspiring thing about this parable to you? Which character do you resonate with, and why? Put yourself in the shoes of the man who was beaten almost to death and picture Jesus coming to you… How does this enhance the parable’s power for you?
Friday | Hebrews 13:1-3
These verses challenge our conception of reality: we can entertain angels?? What does hospitality to strangers look like? When was the last time you struck up a conversation in your neighborhood with someone you didn’t really know? How did it go? What is one thing you can do this weekend to extend God’s hospitality, with discernment, in your community?
